Viols (Viola da Gamba)
Currently I make two styles of Viols based on existing instruments;
Seven string bass viol, construction based on original instruments by
Nicholas Bertrand with carved spruce top.
John Rose tenor/lyra viol with bent staves spruce top
(Original instrument 1598, Ashmolean Museum Oxford)
My Viols are made using a historically informed approach for traditional techniques and methods (such as; mould free construction and linen glued joints). Hot hide glue is used throughout the construction which has the added advantage over modern glues of reversibility, a quality very desirable if repair work is ever need.
Fingerboard and tailpiece veneered using stunning Australian desert Ironwoods & Acacias, such as Gidgee and Mulga.
Traditional wooden pegs or planetary geared tuners made by Pegheds
Various woods used for back and sides
Viols beautifully finished using french polishing techniques, antiqued or clean finish to highlight the natural beauty of the wood.
Requests for other Viol sizes are welcomed.
